New feature: Set yourself goals
July 9th, 2007
We've just gone live with a new feature in Walletproof: Goals.
The idea is that you decide how much you want to spend on a given category and once you've passed that limit, the number in the category overview turns red so you know you've overspent.
To set a goal, click on the category name you want to set a goal for on the right hand side overview. Type in the amount you plan on spending and hit enter. Your goal is now saved.
Once you have spent more on a given category than you set your goal for, the category turns red.
In the screen shots on the right (click to enlarge), a goal of £10 has been set for a pizza (upper right image) but £20 pounds has been spent. The overview for this month's expenses (lower right image) indicates the pizza amount as red, which means you've overspent on pizza. That happens to the best of men.
We have some additional features for the Walletproof goals in the pipeline, so stay tuned!

July 13th, 2007 at 04:09 PM Could a new field be added in the Wizard to account for a starting balance?
July 17th, 2007 at 08:47 PM Just signed up and found it a little scary how much money I get through in a month!! I found it easier to navigate than my google spreadsheet. Thanks

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback!
Cafewanda: I'm glad that you find Walletproof to be easy to use. That's definitely our main goal; to make budgeting super easy.
SpaceDragon: I'll look into adding a starting balance to the wizard. Thanks for the suggestion.

A couple of additional features would be useful- not all income happens on the sam day every month (eg child benefit = once every four weeks)
My wages are paid on 24th and this covers the period 24th of the month to 23rd of the next, but walletproof categorises all expenditure within one calendar month. It would be useful to be able to set your own "accounting period"
Also, don't think that the recurring income/expenditure wizard is working as although I have entered information on here it is only appearing in the current month and future months do not have these "recurring" entries in them.
The site is a great idea and looks really slick.

Hi Lalala.
I'm glad you like the idea. We're constantly brainstorming about the recurring expenses system to accommodate our users' various needs. Thanks for your suggestions.
Regarding the wizard. The expenses will not appear in the future months until that month actually arrives. If you use the wizard in July for example, the expenses for August will only appear once you log in in August or later. Hopefully that explains your issues with the wizard :)

A nice feature would be a desktop application connect to the account to update see your wallet, perhaps something designed in Adobe AIR!

Hi!
Just found this site through Frogpond. I like it a lot!
I had a suggestion, but I wasn't sure if this was the place to send it. I was wondering if there was a way to create subcategories, for example, like you mentioned in the intro-presentation, you can either do food or pizza, books or yoga books, etc. So, perhaps there could be a way to, following your description, have expenses tagged as pizza, milk, eggs, apples, etc. but be able to group those expenses into the "Food" category. That way you could see both your general spending habits (food habits) as well as your pizza consumption.
Thanks!

Hi, I'm not sure if I'm just being a little bit stupid, but I can't find the option to do the goals for every month? Could you explain again how to do it? I've input recurring expenses but would much rather have goals here (and what them all turn red no doubt!)

I entered an incorrect amount and when I went to delete it, nothing happened. Any way you could fix this?
